Apparently there are certain things that make me extremely unsettled in this world.
I’m not a huge fan of strangers.
I can’t stand having a dirty kitchen in my own house. I don’t particularly enjoy any form of small talk. And I am completely thrown off by the deafening silence that comes with an empty house. I never realized that I was so sensitive to the lack of sound until my family went on vacation last week. Even then, everything seemed okay at the house… Until the heating and cooling system broke down. When I was working at home alone and had the quiet hum of the air conditioning system in the background, I hardly noticed that I was the only one in the house. When the air conditioning system abruptly stopped working in the middle of the night that completely changed. Suddenly, without the sound of air rushing through my central air ductwork I was lost. I could hear every creak and groan that the house made and I lied awake all night. The next morning, when I called the local heating and cooling repair shop they told me that they didn’t have an HVAC technician available until later in the week. As I attempted to finish my normal daily activities, I realized that the house was way too quiet without any central AC. No matter how hard I tried to concentrate, my ears were ringing without the large cooling machine humming away in the background. When my family arrived home and found all of my brand new white noise machines, they had a lot of questions.
