We will never forget the afternoon we moved into our college dorm room. We were eighteen years old and so excited to start this next chapter of our lives. We knew that we’d have a roommate. We did not talk to them or meet them prior to living with them. Moving day was in October in the northeastern region of the United States. It was a warm and humid afternoon. Moving all of our clothes, furniture, and items that we needed into our dorm was strenuous work. Luckily, our parents were there to help us. When we entered the dorm, our roommate was already there. She was super hot, and we assumed that was from moving boxes. We came to learn that the air conditioning in our dorm room was not working. We asked our roommate if they told the resident assistant about the air conditioning issue. They said that they told them, however since it was a weekend the college Heating, Ventilation and A/C tech would not be able to come until the next week. We were exasperated that the air conditioning was not working. We did not want our first evening of our new life to be spent covered in sweat excessively. We felt like we were boiling, so a small non air conditioned room with a stranger was a recipe for disaster. We ended up running into our friend that we met at orientation a month prior and told her about the air conditioning not working in our dorm room. She told us that we could sleep in her room because her cooling system was working perfectly. We slept in our friend’s air conditioned dorm room until the Heating, Ventilation and A/C tech came to service the cooling system in our dorm room.
